The Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the lunar calendar following the Winter Solstice. Also known as Spring Festival and Chinese New Year, and celebrated by many Asian cultures around the world, Lunar New Year 2022 is the Year of the Tiger. February 1st kicks off fifteen days of celebrations that mark the start of a fresh year. Read on for what to wear to Lunar New Year festivities, plus get advice from Feng Shui master Francoise Courty-Dan about the most lucky colors to wear in 2022.

Wear Something Red or Gold

Red is worn by many during the Spring Festival because it is considered to be an auspicious color that represents passion, happiness, luck and prosperity. Gold is another very popular color that symbolizes wealth and is worn to attract good fortune.

Wear Something Sentimental

The Lunar New Year is a time to honor ancestors and spend time with family. If you have family heirlooms such as a piece of jewelry or a special garment that has been passed down to you, the Spring Festival is a great time to wear it.

Wear Something Brand New?

It is traditional to wear brand new clothes during the Spring Festival to symbolize change and new beginnings, but some people are embracing secondhand fashion instead. In an article titled, “Why I break with tradition and wear secondhand outfits for Chinese New Year,” author Tammy Gan says, “New clothes are supposed to symbolise a fresh start, but beautiful, more-than-wearable secondhand clothes are so easily found.” Gan also states, “We live in a world of ridiculous overconsumption and overproduction. It’s absurd that we make or buy new clothes when there’s an excess of them.”

If wearing something brand new for the Lunar New Year is important to you, shopping for special items once a year is not overconsuming. However, please make sure it’s something you can incorporate into your wardrobe and wear many times, and that it’s fair trade and sustainably made. Also consider buying something new with tags from a swap or a secondhand shop.

“Based on the theory of the Five Elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, the best colors to wear during the year of the Water Tiger are Wood colors.”

2022 is the Year of the Water Tiger

The Year of the Tiger is the third year of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac animals. The Tiger is a symbol of strength and bravery that embodies ambition, competitiveness, and generosity. In Chinese Astrology, each year is also assigned one of the five elements: Metal, Water, Wood, Earth, and Fire. When you combine the 12-year cycle of animal signs with the five elements, you get a 60-year cycle. 2022 is a water year and the tiger’s fixed element is wood. According to Hu Ying, a professor of East Asian studies at UC Irvine’s School of Humanities, “[The] water tiger is action-oriented. In a new-agey way, you could say it goes with the flow, with the force of least resistance.”

Lucky Colors for 2022

We asked One World Feng Shui founder Francoise Courty-Dan to share her recommendations for the lucky colors to wear in the Year of the Water Tiger:

Based on the theory of the Five Elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, the best colors to wear during the year of the Water Tiger are Wood colors. These are all shades of green, because Wood is the intrinsic element of the Tiger. However, you can also wear colors of 3 other elements: Water colors such as blue, gray and black, for the element of the year.

Fire colors, which are mostly red but also pink, orange and purple and the last element Earth in its wide spectrum of yellow, beige and brown. These 4 elements, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth, provide the empowering colors to wear this year.

You may have noticed that the Metal element is missing. In order to create a greater balance, feel free to implement metal accessories or metal colors like white, gold, silver or any metallic shades. It will thus complete and harmonize the wheel of the Five Elements.

Colors have an impact on you, on your look, and your mood but regardless of the hues you’ll be wearing, remember that you always have the option of living life by design rather than by default. During this Tiger year, stay in the flow and embrace changes; it’ll make your life easier. Go ahead, have fun with your wardrobe, and have an amazing Year of The Water Tiger!
